Friday Night Showcase Crowns First Speed Tour Championadmin
The inaugural Speed Tour Regional Sprint Car Series champion will be crowned this Friday, September 20, for the season-ending Elliott Sportsman Classic. The best open-wheel drivers from along the I-84 corridor battle for standings supremacy alongside racers from the Northwest Sprintcar Racing Association and Davey Hamilton’s King of the Wing series in one of the West’s largest winged asphalt sprintcar showcases.
From Magic Valley Speedway in Twin Falls, Idaho to Hermiston, Oregon’s Hermiston Raceway, the Speed Tour Regional Sprint Cars have thrilled race fans of all ages. Through all of the wicked fast action two young racers have distanced themselves from the rest of the pack, Colton Nelson and Hunter Stanley.
Meridian, Idaho’s Nelson looks to have the inside track to the inaugural Speed Tour Regional Sprint Car Series championship. A strong run in the division’s season-opening race at Magic Valley Speedway ushered Nelson and his Miller Lite, Maxwell Plumbing machine to the top of the standings.
But Nelson hasn’t been alone out front as Stanley mounted a mid-season push. With back-to-back July wins at Magic Valley and Meridian Speedways, Stanley drew within 35 points of Nelson. The youngster from Middleton, Idaho looked to close that gap even further in the series’ last meeting, but an early crash now sees Stanley 101 points out of the top spot.
Along with a point battle, Nelson, Stanley, and the rest of the Speed Tour Regional Sprint Cars face a tall task as they join the nation’s best sprintcar pilots in Friday night’s forty car free-for-all. Can Nelson avoid calamity and cruise to the first Speed Tour Regional Sprint Car championship, or will Stanley make the most of the big field and pull off an upset for the ages?
General admission to Friday night’s Elliott Sportsman Classic is $19 for adults, $17 for seniors and military members, $7 for kids 7-11, and free for kids 6 and under. Gates open at 4:45 p.m. Friday with racing at 6:00 p.m. Log on to the Meridian Speedway site at www.meridianspeedway.com for more information on Friday’s race action.
